Nail varnish came out as a cosmetic product around the same time as technicolour films. A company Cutex released the first tinted liquid nail varnish. Technology developed in the 20th cetuary which meant that nail varnish could now be made from plasticised nitro cellulose which is a man made fibre. This didnt not wear well and chipped easily.
Then Revlon cam along and invented the new opaque enamel.This new nail varnish was much better than teh one created by Cutex. Revlon' s new nail varnish covered blemishes in the nail bed and was cremier and gave richer colour. This launched the company Revlon which is now one of the biggest cosmetic companies.
In the fifties the sale of nail varnish rocketed when seen on famous movie stars in films. In the sixties pale or nude nails were the fashion (nude nail varnish at the moment are very in fashion). Modern day nails have been mixed with synthetic reisins to give a glossy finish and long wearing properties.

There is evidence of nail varnish as far back as 4000 years ago manicures took place in Babylonia in Egypt so nail varnish has beeen around for a long time!
Nail varnish started here as henna for the nails. This trend spread to other cultures and solid gold was often used to perfect a manicure.
In China around 3000BC they did not use gold or henna for their nails they started to make a mixture out of beeswax, gum egg whites and gelatin.
In China nail varnish ws shown as a sign of wealth and social status.It is said that the colours used were mainly red and black.
The added the colour using rose and orchird petals.Doing your nails back then was very time consuming. It would take hours for the nail varnish to set.
